Anekdoter ur fysikhistorien 1

Efter att ha lämnat syrran på flygplatsen igår har jag nu gått in i en koncentrerad period av arbete — det är trots allt för det jag är här — och jag kan därför inte lova några spännande skildringar från Kalifornien annat än möjligen rörande synkrotronljus… Om jag hinner skall jag sticka till stan i helgen och cykla lite upp och ner för backarna, annars blir det möten på SLAC och datorn i knät hemma i Menlo Park. Och en och annan burgare på Jeffrey’s (de godaste burgarna i världen jag hittills ätit) såklart. Här och nu blir det en underbar liten historia som den österrikisk-amerikanske fysikern Victor Weisskopf lär ha berättat och som en av det gamla gardets fysiker på SLAC berättade för mig häromdagen, som tur var on the record:

“In one of his talks he [Weisskopf] said that high energy physics can be compared to the voyage of Columbus. And he said that in high energy physics we have three categories of scientists: On the top of the pyramid you might say are the theoreticians like himself who wonder and develop theories about what the true nature of matter is and what is an elementary particle and what are the fundamental forces and how do they work in this high realm of theory. The next down are the experimentalists, who do the experiments and give the data that theorists use to develop the theories, and then lowest on the ladder are the technologists, the accelerator people, who build the machines that the experimenters use to develop the data that the theorists understand. He said that in the voyage of Columbus, the analogy to the accelerator builder is Columbus himself, people who build and man the ships, who sail across the sea. The analogy to the experimentalists are those few people who jumped off the ship when they reached the new world, and collected bits and pieces of things that they then brought back. And the analogy of the theorists are those who stayed home in Spain, predicting that Columbus would find India.”
