Jag vet vad du pratar om,
men jag förstår det inte… Anslaget beviljat!

För att väga upp mitt förra lätt patetiska depressions-inlägg, tänkte jag dela med mig av en underbar passage i boken jag just läser, Daniel S Greenberg’s The Politics of Pure Science (Univ of Chicago Press, 1967/1999). Detta är humor och intressant vetenskapshistoria på samma gång:

“‘What is intensity?’ Representative Cole asked Johnson, the research director.
‘The number of protons accelerated per minute,’ Johnson replied. ‘It would be one thousand times greater than the $15-million machine we contemplated. The amount of current is needed to get satisfactory experimental results.”
With humility, Cole sought to pursue the matter: ‘Not that it makes any difference if I know the answer, but will you tell me again, this will mean a greater intensity of what?’
‘Of a beam that comes out of the machine of a larger number of protons per second.’
‘It increases the intensity of protons?’ Cole asked.
‘That is correct,’ replied Johnson, ‘and these are the particles you use for the research.’
In an admission of his helplessness, Cole concluded, ‘Now I know what you are talking about but I do not understand it.’
The Joint Committee subsequently approved the request for $27 million.”

På den tiden var det bara större och större maskiner som gällde. Pengarna gödslades ut över högenergifysikernas alltmer kostsamma projekt. Högre energinivå än förra året, högre energinivå än ryssarna (kanske viktigast av allt!) och bättre och bättre instrument. För vilket syfte? För högre energinivå än förra året, för högre energinivå än…
